About us

We come together informally to organise local opposition to the increasingly strident demands of religions.

To gain publicity for our aims, and to get our name known, we organise regular meetings open to everyone.

Is it possible to "organise" atheists and secularists?

Organising atheists is as difficult as herding cats - 20 cats go in 20 different directions because, as everyone knows, dogs may have owners, but cats have staff!

Atheists don't need to be told what to think, we don't want to be lectured at - we can work things out for ourselves without holy books and without male "scholars" interpreting our beliefs.

We are freethinkers, we take great pride in a sense of enquiry, getting the facts, separating the truth from the propaganda and analysing the situation.

However, one glance at the news will show that religion is thriving in the 21st century and inhuman things are done in its name. Over 50% (that's over 150 million people) of the population of the USA really believes that the world was created by their god just over 6,000 years ago and that dinosaurs roamed the Garden of Eden alongside Adam and Eve - it must be true because it's in The Bible.

They also believe in a second coming of their Christ some time within the next 50 years when they will ascend into heaven to sit by the side of their god. They believe that this will happen after a period of great conflict in the world so they see everything that is going on around us (the illegal invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq, the torture of prisoners, suicide bombings etc.) as a fulfillment of their ancient prophesies. Only fundamentalists can applaud when they see 9/11 and bombs blowing people to pieces in Madrid and London - it simply reinforces their beliefs - and they welcome it as a sign of their getting closer to their god.

The increasing stridency and violence of Islam, its demands for special protection from criticism, its demands for faith schools, its demands for Sharia law, and its overt oppression of women and sexual minorities, represents a threat to us all.

We have to stand up and be counted

Today they come to indoctrinate young children in their faith schools, today they hang homosexuals in the streets, today they murder doctors offering abortion, today they cut off women's heads for refusing to wear the veil - tomorrow they will come for us.

We are proud to be atheists - but our freedom to believe what we wish, and to act as we wish within the constraints of laws we agree with, is increasingly threatened by religion

We are brighter then they are - and it's time we did something about their superstitious, supernatural fantasies - fantasies that lead directly to death and misery for millions.

Ask yourself

Can you live with your conscience if you stand by while the religious get away with evil? (Yes, we know "evil;" is a religious word - but it is accurate in this context.)

Religion itself is the problem, - the elephant in the room - and it is time we did something about it.

Join us and get on our mailing list

We have "supporters" not "members" because a membership organisation implies all sort of things:

  • membership fees or subscriptions. (We don't have fees or subscriptions.)
  • a constitution and a book of rules. (We don't need them.)
  • a structure: chairman, president, secretary, treasurer, "the committee". (We don't have a formal structure - we just "do.")
  • endless bickering about "the right line to follow", "the right thing to do" etc. (We don't bicker!)

We are a small group of people who care passionately about the issues involved and who wish to work together on local campaigns. We welcome anyone who can help us to achieve our aims.
